For so many of us with internet access, we feel as if social media is second nature. ‘Never Twitter while you’re bitter’ is a good motto to follow across every social media platform. Social Media should be used to boost your brand, not tarnish it. Although it feels easy (and cathartic!) to blast someone online when they’ve annoyed you, we urge you to refrain. The feeling of satisfaction from biting back lasts a few seconds, but a screenshot can last a lifetime.

Engage, Engage, Engage.

When you post does it often feel as if you’re shouting into the void? Do you have thousands of followers but no one engaging with your fire tweets? Well, there may be a reason for that. According to Edison Research, only 33% of people ever follow brand accounts. That is only ⅓ of people using social media as a whole.

The problem may be that you’re not giving enough love to your audience. Spend a few minutes every day responding to other people’s posts; like them, respond to them, reblog them. However you want your brand’s interaction to look, just make sure you’re getting involved in every conversation that you can. When you start building out a network of people who know you’ll be ready to respond to their posts, they’ll be much more likely to respond to yours.

Keep Your Branding Moments Classy

Repeat after us: not everything has to be a branding moment. Just because a tragedy is trending doesn’t mean you have to be a part of that conversation. The key to great social media is understanding your brand and what you want to say about certain events. Use your better judgement and taste when it comes to turning events into branding moments. Sometimes, lightening will strike and an event will line up perfectly with what you’re trying to accomplish. Other times, it can spell out disaster.
